The TREC Microblog Track is, for the second year running, using a unique “evaluation as a service” model. I decided I’d invest a little bit of time and create a Go library for those of us who use Go and take part in the track (which I imagine is probably only me).

An alternative to lots of Java

Users have been complaining about Gnome’s war on features for some time now, and whilst I agree that sometimes it’s better to have a set of sane defaults, I don’t believe that removing as many options as possible is the best approach. The most recent example I can find on this is the new Places menu in Gnome 3.6.

They fixed this in 3.12
Hadoop is great for dealing with large datasets, however sometimes it struggles with really big datasets. If the number of reducers is quite small then seeing outOfMemoryErrors isn’t all that uncommon. Fixing this can be as simple as increasing the number of reduces available, however that isn’t always an option.

One of the things I’ve found myself wanting to do fairly often is make an editable JLabel in Swing. Unfortunately there isn’t a default component for doing this, you have to make your own.
